Setting off from Kalamata

Kardamyli

There are many interesting destinations in the broader area around Kalamata that are ideal for simple R&R or vacationing, which combine natural beauty and an age-old history.

The towns and villages of Messenian Mani, on the fringes of the Messenian Gulf east of Kalamata are well worth trying. Stoupa (45 km from Kalamata) is a coastal village with long sandy beaches and a magnet for tourists, especially in the summer months. One of the most important landmarks here is the home of the celebrated Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis, where he wrote Alexis Zorbas. Kardamyli (37 km from Kalamata), a pretty and picturesque little town, has stone houses and striking towers that serve as residences.

Methoni

The nearby Vyros Ravine used to connect Kardamyli to Sparta in antiquity.

West of Kalamata there are more attractions to visit, including the town of Koroni, Methoni and Pylos. Koroni (52 km from Kalamata) is built amphitheatrically on a low hill on the southern tip of the Messenian Gulf. The ruins of its castle are its greatest attraction, but the picturesque town itself, with its Medieval feel, is also worth spending some time in. Methoni (61 km from Kalamata), a small town with a rich history, contains a number of significant sights: its castle is among the most impressive in Greece, and especially the Bourtzi (or prison), which stands like a small fortified islet. Pylos or Navarino (65 km from Kalamata) is a lovely little village with many historical monuments located south of the Bay of Navarino. Nearby lie the ruins of the ancient palace of Pylos, as well as the archaeological museum of Choras Trifyllias. North of Kalamata (11 km), it is worth visiting Messini, where the ruins of the homonymous ancient city (4th century BC) were found. At the nearby village of Mavromati there is an archaeological museum dedicated to the excavations of ancient Messini.

Koroni

Last but not least, do not forget to visit ancient Olympia and the temple of Epikoureios Apollon (Vasses Figaleias), one of the most imposing temples of antiquity. In order to visit the temple, we recommend you to take the Diavolitsi-Melpeio road.

Pylos
