EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
University of Peloponnese
School of Social and Political Sciences
Tel. 27210 65114-7, www.uop.gr

The School was established under the 118/3003 presidential decree and comprises two departments: the Department of History, Archaeology and Cultural Assets Management, which began operating in the 2003-2004 academic year, and the Philology Department, which opened in 2005-2006.

Both departments are equipped with all the necessary material and equipment required for their smooth operation. They have workshops (IT, archaeometrics, underwater archaeology, etc.), as well as a library.

The school is housed in a building formerly belonging to the 9th Infantry Regiment in the old Kalamata military base, which has been ceded by the City of Kalamata for this purpose. The two buildings were constructed in 1910 and transformed into teaching and administrative areas under the supervision of the City of Kalamata, the A.G. Leventis Foundation and the Messrs Vas. Constantakopoulos and Con. Arnokouros.

The Kalamata TEI began operating under presidential decree 94/1988, initially as a department of the Patras TEI. One year later, however, the Patras department was abolished and the independent Kalamata TEI established. The institution comprises of the following schools: School of Agricultural Technology, the first department of which went into operation in the 1989-90 academic year, and the School of Management and Economics, the first department of which went into operation in the 1993-94 academic year. The Kalamata TEI compound was completed in 1988 and serves all of the school’s need on site, as well as providing the school with all of its administrative and auxiliary services. The TEI is located in the area of Antikalamos, some 6 kilometers from the city center, accessed by bus and, more recently, rail. Recently an outlier of Kalamata TEI has also been established in Sparta (Department of Information Technology and Communications).
